Brooklyn gets a big assist from the Nets and Liberty

You have to show up. When you show up consistently, people take notice. The work speaks for itself as you do your best to uplift those around you. That work builds community and ensures that things begin to move in a positive direction. For the Brooklyn Nets, community building takes on various forms.

Since they purchased the Nets and New York Liberty in 2019, Joe and Clara Wu Tsai have been active across Brooklyn. The Tsais along with the Social Justice Fund have given back to Brooklyn and worked to improve various communities. On October 30, the Nets, Liberty, and NYC Parks unveiled a newly refurbished basketball court in the East New York part of Brooklyn

“Thank you to everyone for thinking of us, for thinking about Fresh Creek,” Principal Fields said. “For ensuring that our students are not forgotten, but that they are in midst of greatness because we are greatness.”

For the Nets and Liberty’s Social Justice Fund, this investment is another aspect of their work in Brooklyn. The Fund has renovated parks in Brooklyn, uplifted Black owned businesses, and supports non-profits across New York City. The organization has worked to make Brooklyn a better, safer, and more welcoming place to be.

“It’s a big priority of the Social Justice Fund to work with the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Liberty to invest in Brooklyn communities because this is our home,” Nets and Liberty owner Clara Wu Tsai said. “And as we continue to refurbish courts around the borough, the goal is to not only create safe spaces, but also for those living nearby, a really great place to hoop.”

As 2024 ends, the work of the Social Justice Fund continues. Their work across the borough has improved communities across the board with plenty of room to do even more. As the world around us changes, the Nets and Liberty’s continued investment and support in various initiatives and organizations will go a long way in creating a more fair and equitable Brooklyn.
