“When times get hard, he has fortitude.”
The road to stardom isn’t an easy one. There are many bumps in the road and plenty of moments when you wonder if all of it is worth it. Those struggles can be overwhelming, but if you make it through, it gives you newfound strength and a drive to keep going. For Cam Thomas, his journey has taken from unknown prospect to budding NBA star.
On November 18, “From Chesapeake to Brooklyn” debuted at Cobble Hill Cinemas.
At just under 47 minutes, the documentary spans Thomas’ life from a young child in Virginia all the way to his record setting present in Brooklyn. We get to hear from his mother Leslie shines throughout
“She pushes him to be the best that he can be, and he’s the best.”
Cam got his first big opportunity when he played for the EYBL team of the legendary Boo Williams. CT joined the great tradition of Virginia basketball players such as Alonzo Mourning, JJ Redick, JR Reid, Joe Smith, and Allen Iverson. How good was Thomas at EYBL? According to Williams, Cam was the second best scorer he ever coached after Iverson. Impressive company!
From there, we see Thomas make the first big move of his young life. He left home to join the legendary Oak Hill Academy. It was his first time away from his family and he had to follow in the tradition of Oak Hill’s decades long success.
The Nets level
After one year at LSU, Thomas made the leap to the NBA. He joined a Brooklyn Nets team that was in its superteam era and trying to capture New York’s first basketball title since the 1970s. When you join a star studded team as a rookie, your role is pretty simple. Take in the scene, learn from some of the game’s greatest players, and do your best when your number is called. Thomas made the most of his limited opportunities
The biggest moment of Thomas’ career came in February 2022 when he led a historic Nets comeback against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, punctuated by this magic moment
We’ve seen Thomas’ scoring prowess carry over at each level he’s been in. Even as the circumstances change around the Nets, his ability to score and make highlight baskets remains the same. As of this writing, he’s top 20 in the league in scoring and at just 23 years old, still has room to grow. Lucas Kaplan at Netsdaily has more:
“Since his rookie year, Thomas has been a prolific catch-and-shooter. He can explode by closeouts and can hit floaters, layups, and the aforementioned interior passes off those drive. He’s even shown a willingness to relocate and cut off the ball; gun to my head, I think leaning into his off-ball talents is his best path forward, a souped-up complementary option that can step into more responsibility with second units. Perhaps like Norman Powell, but even better, pending any defensive improvement.
So, the Cam Thomas evaluation may be tough, but it’s also kinda boring, isn’t it? Especially when the Cam Thomas Experience is so inebriating. I drank all the spiked Kool-Aid I could at Madison Square Garden this weekend, hoping that he’d keep driving through four people and shooting every time he touched it. Forget potential assists, forget quick decisions, only he can get it going like that.”
That has made Thomas a fan favorite. And for Nets fans, they’ve had his back even when things were not going his way.
Thomas has the fans behind him
Early in Thomas’ NBA journey, he was frustrated and concerned. For the first time in his life, he was stuck to the bench and not playing at all. It got to a point where he was openly campaigning for more minutes. Throughout those struggles, Nets fans continued to show their love and support for Thomas. In a Q&A with Sarah Kustok, CT spoke about that love from the fans:
“It’s good having a support system from a different state, borough that you’re not even from. So having that extra [support], I feel like you couldn’t ask for any more. So it’s technically my second home right now, so I just want to keep that up. Keep putting a show on for y’all, and keep giving y’all somebody to look up to. So just keep supporting me. I got y’all for sure.”
The relationship between fans and a homegrown player is always special. Fans watch a young player learn from their mistakes, get more acclimated to the pro game, and start to reach their full potential. It takes time, but the journey is more than worth it.
The Nets haven’t had a homegrown player make the All Star Game since Brook Lopez in 2013. Thomas represents Brooklyn’s best chance of ending the streak, and if he continues to make plays like this in the clutch, he’ll get there
As Thomas continues his journey, he and the Nets will figure out how to best continue their relationship. There’s the usual rumor mongering about trades, but so far nothing appears likely. Thomas is one of the faces of the Nets franchise and someone the team will likely make a big part of their future.
It’s been an exciting journey thus far for Cam Thomas. He’s carved out a solid role for himself after a few years of delays. He still has plenty of room to get better, but the desire to improve has been with him his entire life. As he continues his professional career, that perseverance will serve him and Brooklyn well.
